Project Topi, being the sole welfare society of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, has established a platform within the GIK community for conscientious individuals that believe in the power of unification and dependability. It is dedicated to not only improve the conditions of the citizens of Topi in the sectors of Health, Education, Social welfare and Emergency relief situations, but also enhance awareness and a sense of duty towards those in need.
Project Topi executes numerous events and modules annually that promote humanitarianism and above all, bridge the gap between generations through generosity and compassion. Since 2000, a significant part of these have been conducted successfully and that too with impactful consequences.
Project Topi also ensures assistance to financially handicapped employees and workers. Funds and resources are categorized to cater to different cases in times of medical and/or financial emergencies. Monetary help to employees is raised who are going through any crisis in fulfilling their household requirements.
Similarly, funds for employees who are in dire need of domestic or medical help for treatment of either accidental injuries or surgical purposes are also provided. In addition, resources and assistance to employees’ children for fee payment to their respective schools, colleges or universities to provide for their admission needs are delivered.
Such initiatives are introduced to reduce the load on financially needy students and their parents by providing the monetary allowance that goes into the payment of the said student’s mess bill fee. PKR 25 is deducted from every student's mess bill to raise enough funds for those students that cannot afford to pay thier mess bills.
We also promote the message of an eco-friendly environment through tree plantations which are conducted by the students themselves and hundreds of plants are sowed in GIK. This provides awareness to primary school kids as well that realize the importance of a greener Pakistan.
As winter in Topi is extremely harsh, we realize the hardships many people in the community face due to lack of warm clothes. Therefore, we organize clothe-drives in GIK to collect clothes from donors and distribute among the working staff of GIK (both male and female).
We cultivated the idea of launching a Clean and Green Pakistan drive that would promote cleanliness within the student body of GIK. To achieve our objective, Project Topi organizes trash picking hikes on the GIK trail. Proper equipment including plastic gloves and shopping bags are provided to all the volunteers.
With the collaborations of renonwned institutions like Rawalpindi Medical College or Red Crescent Society, a blood camps are set up within the central ground of GIKI Institute every semester. A group of doctors and paramedic staff are appointed to ensure efficient administration of the whole day’s agenda. Record breaking figure of 292 students donated blood in a matter of a few hours in 2018, followed by refreshments for the students for their selfless gifts to humanity. Due to the overwhelming response, Project Topi has consistently been accredited with free certifications, recognition in newsletters and free CPR trainings by these organizations.
2018-2019 President Project Topi, Fareed Arshad, pressed on the issue of lack of blood availability for patients in healthcare centres.
‘We aim to actively represent our contribution to enhance the donation culture within GIKI and Pakistan. Our goal is to cater to each and every individual in the country that requires blood and store ample amounts for the future as well. Thank you to all those who participate and show their benevolence. We are truly grateful and utterly humbled by your support!’
GIKI School, established within the premises of GIKI Institute, caters to quality education for the children of GIKI’s employees and administration. Every year, Da Vinci Day is organized by Project Topi to provide a perfect balance of academics, fun activities and awareness amongst the young ones on their responsibilities. A theme of ‘A Greener Earth’ or ‘A Better World’ is usually implemented to educate students on the importance of trees and the harms of global warming. The whole day is organized in various modules that included arts and coloring for classes prep till 3, short quizzes for grades 4 to 6 and mock entry tests for the higher classes to give them an overview of the competition ahead. Tree plantation is also conducted by every class and a hundreds of plants are sowed in the school lawn. By the second half of the day, the younger kids are given chocolates while the position holders of every grade are given certificates and prizes (bags, footballs, bats, color pencils, white boards etc) as a reward for their excellent academic performance. The enthusiasm and excitement on every child’s face has always ensured us of the impeccable execution of the event.
In 2018, for the first time in GIKI, Project Topi was granted to organize and host an event that allowed participation of students from different schools of Topi. After months of hard work and team effort, six schools of Topi and Swabi were formally invited to send selective students for an art competition themed ‘Green Pakistan’, a bilingual speech competition on ‘My role in making Pakistan clean and green’, followed by a seminar by a guest speaker and tree plantation in GIK school.
The event provided a platform for young students to voice their opinions and thoughts for the first time in front of an audience, which they did with zeal and confidence. Careful assessment of delivery, content and body language earned the position holders with winners’ certificates, prizes and the rest were awarded with participation certificates. Similar procedure was followed for drawings submitted under ‘Green Pakistan’. A total of 40 bags had been purchased and gifted to every student for committing to the event and joining Project Topi in its unparalleled cause.
Following the success of this great cause, Project Topi will be conducting this event every year to increase the academic and extra-curricular exposure of the students of Topi.
